When you’ve put your heart and soul into your business, it’s devastating when things don’t go as planned. If your company has been struggling for awhile now, it’s time to face the reality that you might need to layoff some — or all — of your employees.
As a boss, this is probably one of the toughest challenges you’ll ever face, because you respect and admire each person on your team and don’t want to be forced to let any of them go. Learn how to plan for what might be the inevitable, so you can help your employees approach this life-altering change in the best possible way.
3 Ways to Prepare Your Staff for Potential Layoffs
Be Honest
You may think you’re protecting your employees by keeping them in the dark, but the exact opposite is true. Sharing bad news is never fun, but they’ll respect you for being transparent about the situation. The last thing you want is for your team to hear about possible layoffs from someone else, as this will make them feel betrayed and cause you to lose their trust.
Prior to breaking the news, decide what you’ll tell them about the state of the company — and their jobs — and be ready to answer plenty of questions. You’re certainly under an immense amount of stress yourself, but remember to show compassion to your team, as it’s never easy to hear you might lose your job in the near future.
Keep Them Informed
After telling your staff layoffs may need to happen, expect them to be more than a bit on edge. Do your best to ease their minds by keeping them in the loop about what’s going on. Even if the information isn’t good for their future with the company, receiving no news is always worse. When people know where they stand, they can better plan for the future — and they’ll respect you for that.
Offer Rapid Response Assistance
Rapid Response, a program offered by the U.S. Department of Labor, offers a variety of services to companies and employees during layoffs. Contact your state’s Dislocated Worker Unit to see if your organization will qualify if layoffs need to happen. If you do need to let people go, Rapid Response will meet with your employees to offer a variety of services, including career counseling and job search assistance, resume and interview workshops, and unemployment insurance — in addition to providing a host of benefits to your company.
