A new year always brings a host of new trends — and 2017 has some pretty exciting things in store for the hiring process. As an employer, it’s important to stay ahead of the curve, because you don’t want antiquated recruitment practices to keep you from attracting top talent.
Some of this year’s top hiring initiatives are relatively new, while others have been prominent for awhile now. Take these trends into consideration when creating your 2017 hiring strategy.
Candidates Get the Upper Hand
During the recession, unemployment levels soared. Consequently, companies were inundated with applications from top talent — including many overqualified candidates. However, this is now a thing of the past, as the unemployment level has been below 5% since May 2016.
This means companies now have to work much harder to attract the best and brightest candidates. From providing a quick and easy recruitment experience to offering higher salaries and better perks, the pressure is on.
Continued Emphasis on Mobile
In the past, job applications were completed exclusively on the computer, but things have changed. An overwhelming 68% of American adults own a smartphone, according to 2015 survey conducted by the Pew Research Center, so a greater focus needs to be placed on mobile.
The push for companies to optimize job applications for mobile is new for 2017, but it remains essential. Job seekers are searching for opportunities on their smartphones, and if applying for the job is too much of a headache, they’ll give up and move on to the next.
A.I. Takes Over the Hiring Process
Artificial intelligence is taking the recruiting process by storm. Designed to automate much of the recruitment process, several systems are already on the market — including Mya, created by FirstJob.
A.I. software is pretty amazing, because it handles many repetitive tasks for recruiters — allowing them to have more time in their days — but creates a highly personalized experience for candidates. In the case of Mya, FirstJob says studies have revealed the chatbot has improved recruiter efficiency by 38% and candidate engagement by more than 150%.
Non-Traditional Workforce Continues to Grow
Companies will continue the shift from a traditional workforce to one with increased mobility in 2017. Rather than focusing exclusively on hiring full-time staffers, more organizations will move towards freelance talent and temporary staffers.
This innovative approach satisfies job seekers’ need for increased flexibility. It also allows employers to cut staffing costs by hiring talent on an as-needed basis.
