Could 2019 Be Your Year to Offer Flexible Work Schedules

If your company doesn’t offer flexible work schedules, it’s time to consider making a change. Unless you truly need all employees to be physically present in the office for the same time period each day, adhering to this rigid structure isn’t doing your company any favors.

Flexible schedules allow employees to achieve a solid worklife balance. Your company also benefits from a higher level of morale and the greater ability to attract top talent garnered from this perk. There are several ways to offer flexible schedules, and below is a look at a few options.

3 Different Types of Flexible Work Schedules

Work From Home

Advances in technology have made it possible for employees to work from just about anywhere. Assuming your team doesn’t need anything but a laptop to do their jobs, allowing them to work remotely — at least sometimes — is a highly coveted perk. These days, it’s not uncommon for companies to offer this option, so if you don’t provide this benefit, you’ll be at a disadvantage.

Flextime

If you don’t require all employees to start and end work on the same set schedule each day, flextime might be the answer. In this setup, people are required to put in a certain number of hours per day, but they get to choose when they work. For example, one person might opt to work from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., while another is in the office from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Rules for flextime can be customized to fit your needs. Therefore, if you need everyone to be in the office from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day, make this a constraint employees must meet.

Compressed Workweek

Another popular option, a compressed workweek allows employees to put in a full 40-hour week in less than five days, to get extra time away from work. This is commonly achieved on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. For example, an employee might work an extra hour for nine days, then get the 10th day off. Many people like this option, because it gives them more days away from the office.
