There’s no better time for a fresh start than a brand new year. Like most people, you probably started 2016 with a list of resolutions you plan to accomplish during the next 12 months. While you have the best of intentions, there’s a very good chance most — if not all — of these goals will soon go by the wayside if you don’t fully commit yourself to success.
5 Ways to Make Your New Year’s Resolutions Stick
According to U.S. News and World Report, 80% of New Year’s resolutions fail. Follow these five tips to beat the odds and make some real changes in 2016.
Choose Resolutions You’re Passionate About
Getting motivated to accomplish a resolution you’re really not that excited about is challenging — if not impossible. Instead of focusing on goals you feel like you should achieve, work towards those you actually want to complete. When the going gets rough — and it probably will for any accomplishment worth your time — it will be much easier to push through when you’re truly passionate about the end result.
Set Attainable Goals
The start of a new year is exciting, so it’s only natural to get a little carried away when creating your resolutions. However, it’s important to keep yourself in check, as setting goals that are too lofty is a recipe for disaster. Choose accomplishments that will challenge you, but aren’t so aggressive that you’re destined to fail.
Quantify Your Objectives
It’s very difficult to monitor your progress when you set vague resolutions. Quantify each of your goals so you have a specific plan to work towards. For example, saying you want to grow your company in 2016 is a very elusive goal, but vowing to add ten new team members to your staff by the end of the year is something more concrete you can focus on and work towards.
Ask Others to Hold You Accountable
If accomplishing New Year’s resolutions was easy, the failure rate wouldn’t be so high. Making big changes is hard, so you need a strong support system who will hold you accountable for meeting each objective on your path to success. Enlist colleagues, friends, and family to help you stay motivated when things don’t go as planned and you feel like giving up. It’s much easier to stay inspired when you know you’ll have to answer to other people if you don’t keep your word.
Work Towards Your Goals Each Day
Many people have the best of intentions, but ultimately fail at their resolutions because they never find time to accomplish them. Avoid this by working your goals into your everyday life, so you have no excuse not to make progress. Positioning your resolutions as yet another addition to your daily to-do list will only cause you to feel stressed.
