Key Tips for Recruiting Candidates on Twitter

While many recruiters have increased their social media activity on LinkedIn and Facebook, some are slow to embrace Twitter. But engaging with potential clients and candidates on Twitter couldn’t be easier – or more effective.

Here are a few pointers:

  • Follow and follow back. Follow companies you’re targeting, industry thought leaders, any candidates who include their twitter handles in their correspondence. If someone follows you, follow them as well. Twitter is most importantly conversational so it’s important to reciprocate when someone shows interest.
  • Search for appropriate keywords. Use the hashtag (#) to locate tweets in your industry or areas of interest. And be sure to add hashtags to your tweets so that people can find your tweets as well.
  • Tweet daily (or more). While it’s easy to overdo posting on Facebook and LinkedIn, with Twitter you can feel free to post two or three times a day or more.  Post job openings, career tips or industry information and be sure to link back to your company page.
  • Share to Twitter. If your company has a blog, or if you find other interesting relevant blog posts, share them on Twitter. Also be sure to add a Twitter sharing button to your blog, to make it easy for your readers can share your blogs as well.
  • Favorite and Retweet. If you read an interesting tweet that consider share-worthy, star it as a favorite (similar to “liking” by clicking a thumbs-up) or retweet. Clicking the retweet allows you to share a tweet authored by  another tweeter with your followers.
  • Stay engaged. While other social media may serve a post-and-go bulletin board function, on Twitter, conversation is expected.  Reply to tweets, or start a conversation by tweeting a relevant question. For example, if you wanted to engage with potential candidates you could tweet:“What are your biggest job hunting challenges? #jobs #career”When jobseekers reply, offer them advice or respond with clarifying questions. Stay light and conversational, don’t get too sales-focused. And if the respondent needs more personal attention, offer your contact information, or ask them to send you a private twitter message.

If you are not currently using twitter to present yourself as a resource for candidates, give it a try. It takes only a few minutes a day, and it’s free.
