Put Your Electronic Devices Away

These days, no one is ever truly unplugged. In most meetings, the table is covered in laptops and smartphones that are constantly buzzing, blinking and flashing. It’s both rude and distracting to check your messages while someone is trying to have a conversation with you. Put your devices on silent and push them to the side to give the other person your undivided attention.

Maintain Good Eye Contact

It’s important to maintain solid eye contact in every conversation, to show the person that you’re listening and are truly interested in what they have to say. Looking at the person while they’re talking conveys a sense of respect, understanding, and appreciation. Of course, there’s a fine line between appropriate eye contact and staring, so be cognizant not to cross that.

Ask Pointed Questions

Get the most from every conversation by taking in what the person has to say and following up with questions. Wait until there’s an appropriate pause — as you never want to interrupt — and really listen to their answers. This is a great way to learn and grow, while showing the person that you’re truly engaged in the conversation.
