The Shocking Places Millennials Want to Work

In the past, workers vied for jobs at prestigious, multinational corporations, but it seems that Millennials aren’t planning to continue the trend. Shockingly, only 15% of the class of 2015 said they favor large corporations, according to a recent survey conducted by Accenture.

Medium-sized companies were the most popular with this age group, with 35% of respondents expressing an interest, while just 10% indicated a strong desire to work for startups or government agencies.

Millennials Want to Have Fun

An overwhelming 60% of new grads — and 69% of 2013 and 2014 alums — surveyed would take a smaller paycheck for the chance to work for a company offering a “positive social atmosphere.” Perhaps not surprisingly, more than 70% admitted their parents were paying most of their living expenses — or at least half.

In additional to a fun company culture, Millennials really do want to work and they want to do something meaningful. After salary and benefits, 39% reported interesting, challenging work as the most important aspect of a job, closely followed by flexible working hours and the ability to climb the ladder quickly, with 37% and 34% of the vote, respectively.

How to Reach Millennials

Companies that want to attract these young professionals will need to give their recruiting strategy an overhaul, as 64% of 2015 grads say they have or plan to use mobile apps as part of their job search.

As of the first quarter of 2015, Millennials officially make up the largest percentage of U.S. workers, according to the Pew Research Center. More than half of the 2013 and 2014 grads surveyed reported having full time jobs, with 11% claiming they haven’t found a job since graduation.

The Class of 2015 appeared to be the savviest group, as they were the most likely to declare a college major based on its job prospects. Nearly two-thirds anticipate finding a job in their field, despite the fact that only 43% of their peers found full-time work in their first-choice fields just one or two years earlier.
